Notice to All OnceNews Users!

On July 1, 2008, OnceNews.com will discontinue all operations.

After nearly 9 years of serving you, this site is closing down.    But it has been replaced by a more up-to-date and more complete service.

To get to the new service, go to http://www.libs.uga.edu/serials/resources.html and click on the "Search the Unified Newspaper Database" link

Why the change?    Oncenews.com was always intended as a temporary stop-gap measure, but it is labor intensive and the basic information at Oncenews has not been significantly updated since 1999.      But at last a method had been found to keep the newspaper information fresh and updated.    Working with the University of Georgia, the new service offers a lot that is impossible for Oncenews, but retains the most important features:

Information on over 4,000 newspaper titles.

Updated weekly as new issues arrive.

All Georgia newspapers are listed, plus papers from all over the world.

Thematic searching, geared to help with popular topics.

Links to many reference materials and guides, online resources, and archives.

Just go to http://www.libs.uga.edu/serials/resources.html and give it a try. It will take some getting used to, but I think you'll find the information there much more accurate.

Meanwhile, I thank all of you who have used OnceNews throughout the years.    It has been a tremendous pleasure to provide this service.    I hope to be able to play a major role in the Unified Newspaper Database and therefore continue to be of service.

Should you have a question about Georgia newspapers or any newspapers at the University of Georgia, please drop me a line at mainper2@uga.edu and I'll try to answer you as soon as I can.

Best of luck with your research. And thanks for using Oncenews.com!

ABOUT THIS SITE

NOTE: OnceNews does not own any newspapers; OnceNews is only a guide.

This site was adapted from information compiled from the holdings at the University of Georgia Libraries. It uses a database developed from inventories of their microfilm collection. The data collected reflects general holdings for the years given, and does not imply that all dates within a year exist. Therefore, if only one date of one year was found, it is included in this data. Further research on your part will be needed to determine the exact dates available within a particular year. An effort will be made to update the database as time and resources allow but no warranty of completeness is promised.

This site is entirely private and has no affiliation with the University of Georgia or with the University of Georgia Libraries. It is supported and financed by private funds and all of the labor and equipment that has gone into this site, including the database upon which this site is built, has from the beginning been privately committed. However, many users have contributed valuable suggestions that have led to the current design of this site. We hope you will continue to find it useful and will continue to share your thoughts and ideas. --Fernleaf Solutions

HOW TO USE THIS SITE

You may search the database using a year (such as 1834), a town name (such as Statesboro), a county name (such as Morgan), or a newspaper title (such as Enterprise). All of these search terms will be treated like keywords. Therefore, if you search Madison you will get not only the data for Madison County, but also the data for the town of Madison. Your search term must be a minimum of four characters long or it will be rejected. Do not use the word "county" for county searches and do not include "Georgia" in your search.   You can enter your search term in upper case, lower case, or mixed case.

If you only want to search a county name that is also the name of a town, such as Madison, use the Guided Search.

If you see this: beside a County Name, you can click on it to see the newspapers from the surrounding county.

If you see a County Name that is highlighted as a link, clicking on it will perform a search for that county (just like with the Guided Search); this is useful if, for example, you search Atlanta, but then want to see all listings for Fulton County.   Doing so will in many cases give you more hits.

The reverse is also true:  Clicking on a Town Name will perform a search for that town (just like with the Guided Search); this is useful for reducing or limiting the hits you first got after you searched using a year or county name.

Don't see what you are looking for?   Feel free to ask us a question.   See the link at the above left that looks like this:   .
Although we are not a research agency, we'll try to answer you as soon as we can (we don't charge for this service).   In case we don't have an answer, we'll try to give you some leads or refer you to someone else.    We will NEVER pass along the contact information you give us to anyone without your permission!

HOW TO SEE AND USE THE NEWSPAPERS
Many libraries in the country hold microfilm copies of some of these papers, but the most complete collection of all resides at the University of Georgia Libraries. Since the 1950s, this research library has been the center of operations for the Georgia Newspaper Project and has collected and filmed literally thousands of years worth of historical Georgia newspapers. This said, however, you may be able to use the newspapers you need by visiting your local Public Library by making use of Interlibrary Lending, a system by which many libraries share materials with each other.
